First things first, when starting a new embroidery you need to gather all of your supplies! I put together this handy list of items I use to prep my piece.

1. Embroidery Hoops

There are so many shapes and sizes of hoops! You can always stain your hoop to fit your project or even add decorative ribbon.

2. Drawing Mediums

I highly (HIGHLY!) suggest using Solvy. It makes it so easy to transfer any pattern you want and even draw on it as you go, if you want to add something else last minute. It is also super easy to dissolve away. Just add water and it is gone! I also use Micron pens to draw on the Solvy. The different sizes help define details of the pattern.

Another option is to use water soluble pencils. This is a great option, it is just harder to get the details of a pattern in.

Light boards are super helpful for transferring patterns! I have this exact one!

3. Fabric

I suggest using a fabric that is cotton. Kona Cotton is a great brand and comes in tons of colors. I also often use Muslin which is a very economical fabric. Stretchy materials can be difficult to work with, however you can embroider on pretty much anything. If you have fabric scraps or even old clothing it is a great way to reduce waste and make something new!

4. Felt

This is how I like to finish my hoops, although there are other methods!

5. Thread, Needles, Embellishments

If your just starting out I suggest getting big bundles of thread so you have a range of colors. Otherwise, I tend to go with DMC because they are widely available. Having a few extra needles around is always a good idea especially if you are like me and tend to misplace them a lot! I also like to incorporate yarn into my pieces sometimes to give them a different texture. Beads and sequins can also add a nice embellishment. I even like to add gold leaf on occasion.

6. Scissors

A good pair of sharp scissors will make the entire process easier.

I hope this is helpful to everyone wanting to learn a few new skills or getting into embroidery for the first time! If your interested in guided "how to" patterns click HERE.
